Safe handling of veterinary chemotherapy drugs

In a dvm360 interview, Anne Sholly, CVT, VTS (Oncology), Anne Sholly, CVT, VTS (Oncology), described the importance of being educated on and advocating for safe handling of chemotherapy drugs in veterinary medicine.

Anne Sholly, CVT, VTS (Oncology): One thing in oncology, also that is near and dear to my heart, is safe handling of chemotherapy drugs. I think someone [who] is looking to pursue a career in veterinary oncology should really educate themselves on safe handling and administration of chemotherapy drugs.

Some of these chemicals that we work with can be very harmful not only to the people handling them, but the animals we're giving them to, and also the families that are taking these animals home. So, I think that it's something that you really have to be interested in, learn about, and take seriously. If you work in a practice that does not take the safe handling quite as seriously as they should, definitely be an advocate for yourself because some of these drugs can cause some issues for you, definitely.
