Ashley Bourgeois, DVM, DACVD, also known as "The Derm Vet," shares various methods for managing and treating itchy skin in companion animals, plus highlights why this is so important.

When it comes to alleviating itchy skin, veterinary dermatologist Ashley Bourgeois, DVM, DACVD, also known as "The Derm Vet," recommends adopting a multimodal approach. In a recent interview from the Fetch dvm360® Kansas City conference, Bourgeois highlighted a few effective therapies to use when managing and treating allergic or itchy pets, plus why it's important to identify the cause.

"Lots of things can be necessary [for treating itchy skin] and that is where we get to the multimodal approach," Bourgeois told dvm360® staff. "We might need some topical therapy, we might need some systemic antipruritic therapy, figuring out the underlying cause can be important. So, I would say there are a lot of layers to dealing with allergic pets or itchy pets."

She then emphasized that it is equally important to identify the underlying cause of itchy skin.

"Another thing that can be important is identifying the cause," explained Bourgeois. "So, there are lots of wonderful medications out there but we want to know why the pet is allergic because we can minimize the use of some of these drugs if we actually know the underlying trigger."
