Show your new team members you're working to make their jobs easier and provide the best service and care.

Want to put your best foot forward at your new practice? Set yourself up for success with these tips from Firstline Advisory Board members Debbie Allaben Gair, CVPM, Kathy Coffman, and Paige Phillips, RVT.

  • Be open and curious. Your last practice may have copyrighted its stellar phone script, but it's possible your new practice might boast an even better one.

  • Stay positive. Minimize negative comments and criticism. And treat your new co-workers—and potential friends—the way you'd like to be treated.

  • Learn by listening. If you're wondering what to say next or you interrupt with, "I know how to do that already," you may miss an important tip. Your new practice doesn't run like your old one.

  • Carry a notebook and take notes. You'll create a great reference tool written in your own words to help you remember your responsibilities and your practice's protocol.

  • Ask questions. And write the answers in your notebook.

  • Ask before you dive in. If you don't know your new practice's preferred reception protocol and the phone rings, ask, "Would you like me to answer the phone?"

  • Do what you know. Pitch in when you can: pick up clutter, throw trash away, sweep the floor, greet clients politely, or walk dogs.
