Your role with referrals

Q. What can team members do to help veterinarians as they refer more cases?

Paige Phillips, RVT
It depends on the doctor's comfort level—and yours, says Paige Phillips, RVT, chief of operations at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of the Carolinas in Cary, N.C., and Firstline Editorial Advisory Board member. If working with the referring doctor, at a minimum, you can collect patient histories, lab reports, radiographs, or any other documentation and send those to the referral doctor for review.

But if you feel confident that you can assist with the referral letter, Phillips says, express your interest to your manager and the doctor. Then ask to practice writing some referral letters or taking referrals under their direction. The doctor may be relieved you're willing to help, she says.
