Break out the pink ribbons: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many of your clients probably know someone who has been affected by the disease, but are they aware that it occurs in pets, too?
Your clients will be relieved to know that they can all but eliminate breast cancer by spaying their dogs before their first heat cycle. The same is true for cats, though the feline form of the disease is less common. For intact pets, reproduction and nursing can reduce the risk of breast cancer. Encourage clients to bring their pets in twice a year for a physical exam and anytime they feel new lumps on their pets. Just like in humans, cancers caught early have the best chance of being cured.
